I knew you must be back stateside when you started writing more, but had been neglectful in checking the updates the last couple of weeks. Just read through them and it's evident that Jake has made amazing progress. So happy for all three of you, and Gray (my 4-year-old boy) and I will continue to keep your family in our prayers, as we have been.

I just read the latest update... 12 hours of feeding and 5 hours of sleep in 1-3 hour increments!? My goodness. I mean I thought you looked great after seeing you "live" yesterday, but after reading this, I'm thinking you are super human!
11/13/2013 11:38:22 AM
I do thoroughly enjoy your updates and new pictures. Jake is just adorable in his Longhorn gear. I love the photo of Jake and Pepper sleeping. He knows he is safe with the warm bundle of fur beside him.
Get rest when you can and keep yourself healthy.

Jake is looking so good and healthy. I love all the pictures of him in his new clothes. I am very happy for y'all. I know it has been tough but you have one heck of a story to tell him when he is older.
11/1/2013 10:00:40 PM
Congratulations Heidi. Your strength throughout this whole situation (read the whole story) is astounding. Your son looks like he is growing bigger each day and we are very happy for you. As always, let us know if we can ever help you with anything. Come back soon!

You might remember me Paul, I am a friend of your moms. I used to live in Austin early 90's but have been back in Cochabamba Bolivia sinces 1996. Your mom has kept me informed of your Little Jakes progress and now I have read with great joy, laughter and some tears all these beautiful updates of yours. Since I first heard of your long struggles, I have kept all three of you in my prayers. My Laudes prayers group (which we gather together every morning at 6:30AM for prayer befor daily mass) have kept Jake and both of you in our prayers. We rejoice with every good news note that your mom sends and now with your updates, we accompany you and please know that you both and specially your little angel Jake are right in our dear Lords loving embrace and in the middle of His precious Heart!
Sending you all my love and know that you will be in all of our prayers.
Much love from your Bolivian brothers and sisters in Christ.

I've been following Jake's progress and having frequent talks with his grandma Liz. I had to smile when hearing about Jake's ability to pee on his diaper changer. Your cousin John gave Jake's great grandmother Doucie a faceful many years ago when she was changing his diaper. So glad he is doing well. PS--I checkedwith a former boss of mine who recommended definitelly that JAKE have RSVinjection before travelling home--for what that is worth.
10/19/2013 2:58:48 PM
It is great to hear he is doing better. Watch and observe exactly what is happening when his oxygen saturation dips. When Gene was in the ER, his saturation kept flat lining. I finally figured out the blood pressure cuff was on the same arm as the sensor. Every time it cycled, it would flat line. The cuff would shut off circulation in his arm and his oxygen saturation would flat line. It was very picky about where that hand was as well. If his hand was on the rail of the bed, it was fine. If he moved it where it was resting on the bed, it would go nuts and set off all kinds of alarms. Jake may be trying to kick it off too just like they do when they have a pair of socks on. Good thoughts and prayers for all of you.

Jake, hang in there, bud. Glad to hear that you are feeding. I don't know your parents, but from what I can tell, you are a lucky kid. And if your old man's parenting skills are as detailed and thorough as his writing, you are in for a fun ride.
Hook 'em, Jake.

Prayers for this round of treatment to close the ductus.
Heidi, have they tried a wedge under Jake's crib to raise his head and chest slightly when he is resting on his back?
I thoroughly enjoyed all the new photos you posted. He is looking so good and growing a lot.
It is good Paul will be back soon. I know it has to be hard to go back to the US and be away from you and Jake.

Paul and Heidi: We love reading the updates about Jake and we can't wait to meet him, although we assume it's going to be a long time before you want 4 germy boys around him. We pray for him often. We know that Jake is getting amazing care and we hope that you are also both taking care of yourself. We've been told that parenthood is a marathon, not a sprint, and we are reminded of it daily.

9/24/2013 9:48:24 AM
He looks fantastic and appears to be adding weight and filling out. I know I am a few days late, but happy 1 month birthday to Jake. The picture of him sleeping on mormor's chest is beautiful. I do hope he will be able to be rid of the C-pap soon. His next goal will to be rid of the feeding tube. I too am a huge believer in the time you get to spend with him on your chest. I am very happy this hospital lets parents have this precious time with their baby.
9/23/2013 7:50:59 PM

Uh-oh, I guess you heard my irate thoughts when your update was not posted this morning.
Paul and Heidi, I must confess when I saw his picture with his blue cap on, I just wanted to reach thought the laptop, pick him ever so gently up, and gently kiss his sweet forehead. He is so strong, alert, such a little fighter you have to adore him. Discovering and learning his personality traits is one of the joys of being a parent. He will continue to surprise you along the way. Do take the time to write about them in a journal.
Prayers for the treatment to work. Love and hugs to all of you.

This is similar in design to the hammock my grandson used when he was an infant born with GERD. It really helped him, along with medication, be able to sleep. I like it because the sides did not seem to try to wrap around him.
Jake is really growing and seeing new photos of him make me smile a happy smile for all of you.

I am an Aggie graduate with 2 kids at A&M now with a 3rd son who is a Sr in high school that taunts me with his thoughts of attending Texas. I will support him un-conditionally whatever he does because the important things in life trancend school colors and pride. Cherish that little blessing you have, and know that I will pray for him and your family. Gig 'em, or Hook 'em, or Sic 'em or whatever brings ya'll through this.

Best thoughts and wishes to--and for--your new cain! You're probably not right where you want to be, but you definitely are right where you need to be! Your son will thrive and prosper--so will his parents--and his siblings. All you're doing right now is taking the measure of his and your strength-- and you're amassing many, many kick-ass stories for impending holiday roundtables and late-night, bourbon-enhanced shares. Best wishes for healthy and strong lungs! We'll be thinking about you--and pulling for you, all... JVB

Prayers and best wishes for you and your family, and above all congratulations on your new little man. Even with the difficult circumstances under which Jake made his entrance, there is nothing like joy and wonder and innocence of a newborn baby. We recently had our fourth, and it never gets old. I think Wordsworth expressed it best:
Not in entire forgetfulness,
And not in utter nakedness,
But trailing clouds of glory do we come
From God, who is our home:
Heaven lies about us in our infancy!
Shades of the prison-house begin to close
Upon the growing Boy,
But He beholds the light, and whence it flows,
He sees it in his joy;
Enjoy every moment of it--it goes by so fast.

Congrats. Best to you and your family. As a new father myself (7/29), Jake's story takes on a new meaning. Love 'em up. Oh, and I already asked several doctors, and there is no way to definitively prove that your child is gifted and better than all other kids, you just have to take it on faith ;)

Just wanted you to know that I am rooting for your family and especially Jake. Having a kid really changes your perspective on shit and I will be thinking of you all often.
Coincidentally, I used to live in Varde, DK, which is about 30 mins east of Esbjerg. I know its tough to go through this so far away from where you feel home is, but I know some of the medical community in Esbjerg and based on that little knowledge of their system, you are in great hands.
